Minnesota Association of Vetrinary Technicians

Practice Act

Chair: Kim Horne

Kim Horne

Currently, I chair the Practice Act committee which includes being a member of the MVMA Vet Tech committee. The Practice Act Committee was reactivated in 2005 and is still working on our initiative to include Vet Techs in our states practice act (which is a law defining how veterinary medicine is practiced in MN). I also co-chair the MAVT Certification committee responsibilities include annual review of certification renewals and revisions to continuing education guideline documents.

I graduated from the University of Minnesota, Technical College of Waseca in 1980 (before a certification test was available). I have been a MAVT member ever since and have seen the association and convention grow substantially!  My previous involvement with MAVT included being on the newsletter committee and convention planning committee.

I have worked at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center since 1987 and spent many years in the dermatology service before becoming a supervisor for the specialties vet tech staff.  Besides MAVT, I am also a member of:  National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America and American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology.  With NAVTA, I am a member of the VTS Certification Committee.  I am currently working on developing a vet tech specialty in dermatology as well as writing / editing a derm book for vet techs.

My hope is to spend more time “up north” to enjoy hiking and kayaking.  I live in Faribault with two dogs, Shelby and Jack, and husband Steve.  At one point, we shared our home with a horse, donkey, three dogs and three cats.  Steve said he knew when he married me that we would have lots of pets – but being in the veterinary field – he thought they would all be really well behaved!  He has finally figured out that vet techs tend to adopt the “problem” children.
