Mentorship Matters!
Early on in many of our veterinary technician careers, we seek out council and support from a mentor, but mentorship isn’t just for the start of your career- it has value at any point along your path! Mentorship can have a very positive impact on not only your career, but also your sense of personal wellness. One of the large ways that mentorship can have a positive impact on your well-being is through the power of connection and strengthening your sense of community. In a new (and free!) ebook from VETgirl, Put Your Mental Health First, the importance of connection on our mental well-being is highlighted. In addition, a new service to the industry, MentorVet, has recently expanded their services to Vet Techs! Mentorship can happen both inside and outside of your workplace, and can also be either formal or informal, so there is no need to be intimidated by the idea of finding a mentor or becoming one for someone else!
As we head through September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month, it is important to ensure that everyone working within our profession is aware of key resources and contacts for help when needed:
· Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: 988 or 1-800-273-TALK
· Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
Wellness matters. You matter. The MAVT Wellness committee was created to hold space for the importance of this topic in our profession, and as this new committee grows, we hope to provide more information, resources, as well as events where we can connect with each other. If you are interested in joining the wellness committee, please email info@mnmavt.org.
